I’ve always wanted to go on a mission trip and God has graciously provided this chance for me to see better what it is to seek Him and His Kingdom.
항상 선교를 가보고 싶은 마음을 가지고 있던 저에게 주님께서 먼저 하나님의 나라와 그의 의를 구하는 것을 제 눈으로 보게 하시기 위해 감사하게도 이러한 기회를 제공해주셨습니다.
‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce. Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters, multiply there, do not decrease. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you in exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.” (Jeremiah 29:4-7)
Jeremiah 29:4-7 is the verse that brought Jubilee to come to think of Namyangju as a mission field that God has specially picked to be cared for. To be honest, I googled “Heartland” when I heard them talking about it but it turned out it was another name for Namyangju. God has called the Israelites who were in exile (in Babylon) to pray for Babylon's prosperity. God tells the Israelites "I have sent into exile" indicating that it was His will which led them to exile. Just like how it was for the Israelites, it applies the same for each one of us too. We are called to where we are right now and we are to bring common good for the nation and its people. Thanks to our Lord that we have been sent here where there are so many to serve in this nation of South Korea where Christianity has been dying out! His love and passion for this country has not died out.
예레미아 29장 4-7절이 제가 다니는 Jubilee교회가 선교지로서 하나님께서 특별히 고르신 장소인 남양주를 생각하게 된 계기라고 합니다. 조금 창피하지만 사실 “Heartland”라고 다들 말하는 걸 듣고 그게 도대체 어딘지 몰라 구글에 검색했습니다. 근데 남양주더군요. 하나님께선 바빌론의 포로로 잡혀온 이스라엘 사람에게 바빌론을 향한 축복기도를 하라고 말씀하십니다. 주님께선 "내가" 그들을 망명하게 했다고 하시며 이스라엘 족속의 운명은 그의 뜻이었음을 강조하십니다. 이 말씀이 우리에게 똑같이 적용됩니다. 우리는 하나님의 뜻 안에 지금 우리가 있는 곳에 살고 있는 것이며 그 나라와 민족의 번영을 위해 일해야 합니다. 기독교인들의 수가 줄어들고 있는 한국에 저희를 데려다주신 하나님께 오히려 감사할 나름입니다! 옛날 우리의 조상들에게 향한 하나님의 마음은 우리에게도 한치 변함없이 똑같음을 지금 세대는 알아야 합니다.
Namyangju lies northeast to Seoul – in Gyeonggi Province. This is where a lot of residents flood into these days due to expensive occupancy costs. When all we could see is the positive side of the development of the city, there is always the flip side of the development itself. As the world is able to spot, there has been a lot of division in families due to increase in instability. The results of increasing number of double-income families and single-parent families were either abandoned children or those who are filled with insecurity because they don’t know where to belong to. On top of this, the Korean educational system – which is quite well-known for its harshness – is another great factor stumbling them and making them feel like getting into a good college is the one and last goal of their lives. These children in Namyangju, – especially the ones we are going to be spending our week with – a majority comes from abandoned families. Many of them live with their grandparents due to their parents’ divorce or other occasional reasons.
경기도 남양주는 서울의 북동방향으로 바로 옆에 위치해있습니다. 서울에 입주비용이 크게 오르자 남양주는 거주도시로서 떠오르는 도시라고 할 수 있습니다. 모두가 도시의 발전에 대한 긍정적인 면만을 보고 있기 때문에 발전 그 자체의 이면을 잘 들여다보지 못할 때가 많습니다. 세상에 모든 이들이 발견할 수 있듯이 우리의 삶에 불안정성이 증가하면서 가정의 분화도 동시에 많이 일어나고 있습니다. 이렇게 맞벌이 가정과 한부모 가정의 수의 급증이 낳은 결과는 어디로 가야 할지 몰라 불안정한 마음으로 떨고 있는 우리 아이들이었습니다. 이에 더해 외국에서마저 힘들기로 유명한 한국 교육체제는 아이들이 좋은 대학만이 그들의 단 하나 그리고 마지막인 목표로 인식하게 만들어 그들의 정서를 붙잡고 흔드는 역할을 혹독히 해내고 있습니다. 저희 선교팀이 함께 시간을 나눌 남양주에 살고 있는 이 아이들의 대다수가 상처를 가진 가족에서 온다고 합니다. 많은 아이들이 그들의 부모님의 이혼이나 다른 이유로 할머니 할아버지께 맞겨졌다고 합니다.
It has only been few months since I have graduated high school. I finished my first semester in college. I attended one year of middle school and whole three years of high school here in Korea so I know what these kids may be going through. What I pray and wish is that through this great privilege God has provided for all of us we may be able to tell them about the Truth which is meant to be the ultimate goal for everyone.
저는 고등학교를 졸업한지 얼마 되지 않았습니다. 이제서야 갓 대학에서의 첫 학기를 마쳤습니다. 저는 인도에서 어린 나이에 5년의 어린시절을 보낸 후 한국에 돌아와 중학교 1년, 고등학교 3년을 모두 치르며 적응해야 했습니다. 이 아이들이 지금 겪고 있는 힘듦을 조금은 더 이해할 수 있기에 그들에게 하나님 나라를 알아야만 하는 그 이유를 잘 말해줄 수 있을 것만 같습니다. 제가 기도하는 것은 저희 모두에게 주어진 좋은 기회를 통해 모두의 삶의 궁극적인 목표가 되어야 할 진실을 알렸으면 하는 것입니다.
“Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33, ESV)
“너희는 먼저 하나님의 나라와 그의 의를 구하라. 그러면 이 모든 것을 너희에게 덤으로 주실 것이다.” (마태복음 6:33, KLB)
Yes, God has called us, them and everyone his children and we all ought to be told about the Good News and what hope it could bring us. In this broken world, there are just too many living in death because those who have heard the Good News because nobody has reached out to them. They ought to know, and they ought to be saved. And this is the reason why we are reaching out to these children.
하나님께서는 우리를, 이 아이들을 그리고 이세상 모든 이들을 그의 자녀라고 부르셨고, 그 복음과 복음이 가져오는 희망에 대해 들을 수 있는 자격은 모두가 가지고 있습니다. 이제는 너무나도 많은 상처를 가진 세상에는 아무도 손을 내밀지 않았기 때문에 복음을 듣지 못했고 그래서 죽음에 살고 있는 사람들이 너무나도 많습니다. 모든 사람은 복음을 알아야 하며, 모든 사람은 구원받을 권리가 있습니다. 그리고 이 것이 바로 우리가 이 아이들에게 손을 내미는 이유입니다.
“The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17)
“너의 하나님 여호와가 너와 함께하신다. 그는 전능한 구원자이시다. 그가 너를 아주 기쁘게 여기시며 너를 말없이 사랑하시고 너 때문에 노래를 부르며 즐거워하실 것이다.” (스바냐 3:17)
From August 8-13, our team from Jubilee Church will be headed to Namyanju and hold VBS for elementary students for first 3 days. The rest 5 days we will be having bible studies and all sorts of different activities with middle and high school students from all over Namyangju.
8월 8일부터 13일까지 Jubilee Church에서 보내는 저희 팀은 남양주에서 선교활동을 할 계획입니다. 첫 3일 동안은 초등학생들과 VBS를 진행합니다. 그리고 남은 3일동안에는 중고등학생들과 성경공부를 비롯한 많은 활동을 할 계획입니다.
